Blade Runner Deckard’s Gun “Steyer-Damler-Puch A.G. Steyr Mannlicher MOD. 5L” 1:1 Scale Resin Garage Model Kit by Space Station Studios
Distributed by Space Station Studios, Waltham, MA. Artist Unknown. Made in USA. Circa 1982-85. Approx. 1:1 scale. Cast resin. Approx. 8” long.
From the original “Blade Runner” (1982) science fiction movie directed by Riddley Scott and starring Harrison Ford (as Deckard), this cast resin kit is what is commonly called a “Garage Kit”, meaning it was produced in someone’s garage (or basement) and not by an established manufacturer. I bought this kit at a collectibles show in the Boston area sometime around 1985. I was beginning to collect Bladerunner items and, except for the die-cast ERTL cars and odd paper items, there wasn’t much available. Very few U.S. toys were released for this dark, foreboding adult-rated sci-fi film (not for children) and at that time there were no toys of Deckard’s Bladerunner gun. A resin kit was the only option available. I intended to build it but never got around to it. This kit appears to have been produced in very small numbers (I’ve never seen another identical one) . The enclosed painting and assembly instructions as well as business reply form are all Xerox copies. “Space Station Studios” may not be the manufacturer (note there is no email address anywhere on these papers) and only the distributor. A Boston area code phone number is written in pen at the bottom of the reply form with the name “Ken” (the owner? – but probably not the artist).
This kit is for an experienced modeler. It will need some work to look good. It has never been assembled or painted but it is basically a solid piece of cast resin and the casting is somewhat rough in spots with bubble holes that need to be filled and smoothed over, detached trigger guard and double triggers that need to be attached and edges that need to be trimmed, as well as an overall paint job (refer to painting guide). The resin shows no major cracks or breaks. The left side of the barrel is marked “Steyer-Damler-Puch A.G. Steyr Mannlicher MOD. 5L” and the left side “Made In Austria” and “5223”.
A great addition to any collection.
